Roadside Safety: Prepare for Vehicle Emergency
I am not the most mechanically inclined guy but for me changing a tire has never been hard. The process of changing a tire does get a bit more challenging when you are changing a tire on the side of a busy highway, while traveling with your family. A simple task which I had done before became much more difficult when a family is thrown into the mix.
Embarking on a weekend trip to the mountains the whole family was packed into the minivan. About half way into the drive we had to stop singing "1284 bottles of beer on the wall" due to a flat tire. While parked in the emergency lane I was presented with my first challenge, getting the family out of the car and away from the side of the road. First you have to make sure the kids had their shoes on. Next I explained to the kids that they had to walk up the embankment to get AWAY from the road. Both my wife and I walked the children a sufficient distance away from the road. Being that this is the age of distracted drivers I did not want my kids anywhere near the side of the road. With my wife keeping the kids away from the road I walked to the minivan to begin the simple task of changing the tire.
The biggest mistake I made was driving a vehicle I was not familiar with. In my case we were driving my wife's minivan. I should have taken the time to get to know little things like, where the spare is, or how to remove it from its position.
When you get a flat the first thing you do is get out the spare tire, jack and lug wrench. Now I was not sure where exactly, the spare was located (which ended up being underneath the vehicle). Since I was unfamiliar with the vehicle I was unfamiliar with how to actually remove the spare from its little cubbyhole. To find the answer I had to consult the owners' manual in the glove compartment. This whole process is pretty embarrassing to do in front of your family. Now the tire had to be lowered from its position from a lug nut that was located on the floor in the back area if the minivan. Accessing this nut leads us to the second difficulty I never really thought about, how you pack your car. In order to get to the nut I had to empty the back storage area of the minivan. Letting the kids pack their own stuff lead to an assortment of things that never really made it into their bags. So there were random articles of clothing, toys and let's not forget the ripped plastic bag that had food for the trip. All of these random things had to be removed then gently placed on top of the luggage that was sitting in the wet grass on the side of the interstate.
After all of the luggage was out of the back of the minivan I was able to finally remove the tire. I found the jack and had to consult the owner's manual once again to find the exact location to place the jack as to not damage the undercarriage of the van. The jack worked perfectly the lug nuts came off and the flat tires were removed. This was the point where I began to get a bit overconfident, and think that everything else would be easy. With the spare on and the lug nuts attached I began to lower the minivan. As I lowered the van I noticed that the tire was not inflated properly, we had a spare that was low on air. I guess you could say that the pressure in the spare was one of those things I had forgotten to check before we made the trip. So with a sagging tire I repacked the back of the van, loaded the flat tire and packed the family back into the van. Using caution we were able to drive the 5 miles to the next exit where we were able to have our tire repaired and our spare pumped up. Oh and a final unpacking and repacking of the back in order to return the spare tire to its cubbyhole.
So, on your next road trip think about the following things in order to make changing a flat much easier.
Know the vehicle you will be driving. Be sure to know where the spare tire, jack and lug wrench are stowed. Also if the spare is under the car make sure you know how to remove it. Give the spare a once over and check to see if it is properly inflated. Also take a few minutes and check out how the jack works. And let's not forget know where exactly the jack needs to be placed so it will not damage your car.
Properly pack your vehicle. Make sure everything is bag or case. Try to fit everything in the fewest number of bags. If you are in a situation where you need to unload your car on the side of the road, having a few bags and no loose items will make things much easier.
Make yourself a tire emergency kit. In the kit have a reflective triangle that you can place behind your car to alert motorists. Also make sure you have a flashlight, some paper towels to clean your hands, and a can of Fix-A –Flat. All of these things will come in real handy when experiencing a flat on a busy road.
By being prepared one can quickly change a tire, even with their WHOLE family in tow.

Holy crap, you know how to throw a party!
Only addition I can see would be grenadine.
I gotta saw, though, Southern Comfort, really? Not much of a whiskey drinker? How about Jim Beam or Jack Daniel's at the very least.
