Smoking ban an Irish success story
One of the great mysteries of modern Irish life was the acceptance by the public of the smoking ban which was introduced by Minister for Health, Michael Martin, in March 2004. The initial reaction of a sceptical Irish public was that it would not work. Our traditionally rebellious nature would see to its demise was the general prediction prior to the introduction. Ireland was also the first country in the EU to introduce such legislation and was alone in taking such a stand, without public support from Brussels.
Perhaps that was why it succeeded. This was an Irish initiative, not an EU imposed one, and thus there was possibly a sense of pride in being to the forefront of change pioneered by Ireland. In the immediate aftermath of the introduction there were pockets of resistance, mainly in rural areas, where some publicans were reluctant to implement the new law because of their concern for elderly customers. In the main, however, the law was observed and the few court cases that initially followed for breaking it were enough of a deterrent to prevent many repeats happening.
There is no doubt the smoking ban resulted in a slowdown in the pub trade, particularly in rural areas of Ireland. Many publicans moan that it was the beginning of the demise of the country pub as we know it and along with stricter drink driving regulations, many were forced to close their doors. Complaints from the licensed trade that tourism would suffer were unfounded and proved an exercise in kite flying. As other countries throughout Europe followed Ireland’s example, the transformation was complete and smoke-free bars, restaurants and workplaces became the norm for Ireland. Indeed, such is the acceptance of the laws that most visitors would not dream of smoking the home of their host.
However, it had had a detrimental effect on those great conversations and arguments that used to evolve in Irish bars whether it would be about politics or sport. Now, a great banter can be broken up by the departing of one of the participants for a fag and a conversation can also break down with the return of somebody from the smoke shelter.
On the other hand, an unexpected activity prospered because of the smoking area – that of chatting up females/males in its smoky confines. It has got to the stage that even if one doesn’t smoke, a visit to the smoke room might be in order if a bit of romance is being sought. Even a smoke cloud has a silver lining!

An Irish,English and Scotsman were sitting in a bar in Sydney
"The view is fantastic the beer excellent and the food, but," said the Scots, "I still prefer the pubs back home. Why, in Glasgow there is a little bar called McTavish's. Now the landlord there goes out of his way for the locals so much that when you buy 4 drinks he will buy the 5th for you."
"Well" says the Englishman "At my local, the Red Lion, the barman there will buy you your 3rd drink after you buy the fisrt 2."
"Ahhhh that's nothing" says the Irishman "Back home in Dublin there is Ryans bar. Now the moment you set foot in the place they will buy you a drink, then another, all the the drinks you like. Then when you have had enough drink they'll take you upstairs and see that you get laid: all on the house."
