Visit to "beer Exposed"
This strongly hyped inaugural exposition was held Sept. 25-27 at the Business Design Centre in London's Islington borough. It is the brainchild of Des Mulcahy and Matt Roclawski, directors of Copper Tun Ltd, who come from a background in banking, property and events. In my view they successfully attracted an interesting range of exhibitors, from UK real ale purveyors such as Thornbridge and Fullers, to exotic foreign producers from Belgium to Ethiopia (whose beer, sadly, failed to arrive).
I attended both the Friday evening and Saturday evening sessions, at a total cost of £5 (there were many discounts floating around from the normal £14 entry fee - on Saturday I got in free altogether - the only annoyance was that everything shut down between 4 and 5 pm, which I learned on arriving at 3:30). For this price one received a tasting glass, and free (and in many cases, ample) tastes of brews on offer, as well as associated promotional materials. The vast majority of beers were in bottles, but with many of these, particularly the Belgians, it was no bad thing. Many stands also offered some free nibbles, and water was in abundance.
CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) had an informative and welcoming stand (I met fellow North London CAMRA branch member Tony there on Friday), and tourist boards of Poland, Flanders and Lithuania were also present. I counted at least 4 Polish brewery stands, but of that group most enjoyed the Zywiec porter. Also interesting was the Greene King Crafty Hen (spin-off of Old Speckled Hen, using, like Strong Suffolk Ale, a blend of old 5X).
There was no lack of insipidity as well, dominated in my opinion by the Asian beers (Tsingtao's short silk dresses could by no means make up for the product), but careful choosing permitted an overall enjoyable result. Other noteworthy names I sampled included Bakalar ("Teacher"), a Czech dark lager from Rakovnik, and French Brasserie La Choulette's Ambree. More recent establishments such as Brew Dog and Red Rat provided support for a relatively young and trendy audience. American beers were also represented, including Anchor, Flying Dog, Goose Island, Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn. Participants were convivial, and brewery reps were by and large quite friendly.
The exposition was further supplemented by tutorials from renowned names such as Roger Protz and Garrett Oliver (these were meant to be chargeable as well, but the ones I attended were gratis). Maybe not a lot new to be learned for many of us, but enjoyable nonetheless - and great for beer novices. Roger himself observed to me, that it was similar to a CAMRA fest, only with more pretty girls - if we can manage that along with some decent beer, it works for me. Plans seem to be to repeat this event next year.

Questions & Answers about Top Old Beer
why is there foam in my fish tank?
i started a new tank yesterday, and awoke to foam heaven. it is not coming over the top of the tank. it's a 5 gallon bow front tank. i used the water treatment that came with it, it's called aqua safe. the directions are as followed. it said to use 1 tsp for every 10 gallons, so i put in a 1/2 tsp. i smelled the filter and it kinda smells like old beer that has sat for a day or two. is there anyway i can get ride of the foam, or is it safe to put in fish? thank you
i did rinse all the rocks and decor off well
Old beer smell screams yeast and ammonia. It sounds like there was something organic in the tank that somehow got missed during the cleaning and set up. I would suggest you remove about 1/2 the water and wash off the filter materials and let it run for a day or so before you do anything else. If it is still making more foam, rewash everything yet again.
Even though some others may have been joking, do make sure there isn't anyone around that might have messed with you or accidentally put something in the tank. Can a pet get to the tank to drink out of it for example?
If all else fails, return it for another set up.

I Think I Witnessed a Rape - What Should I Do?
I think I was raped last night. I was at a bar and a woman who was about ten years older started talking to me. I went to the bathroom and when i came back she had bought me another beer. I drank it and got really dizzy and I must have blacked out.
When i woke up we were in a room I didn't recognize and she was on top of me naked, having sex. I woke up this morning with blisters and a rash on my penis. I think she gave me herpes and she raped me.
What can I do? I never caught her name. But I think I love her.
You never caught her name but you certainly caught her herpes and it's gone all over your face by the look of it
